Larry Cullen, Digi-Trax’s Vice President of Software Development, has participated as a corporate member on the AABB, ISBT 128 Task Force. The implementation plan is now available from AABB
(www.aabb.org). The current part # is
043005 and the cost is $20.00.
The implementation plan includes a Gantt chart detailing all steps which will require up to 426 days (14 months) to complete. The very first step is to register with the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation (ICCBBA). Go to their web site:
www.iccbba.com
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has mandated through the FDA that all Drugs and Biological products, including blood, utilize a “machine read” format (bar coding) that is approved by CBER. For blood products this “machine read” code must identify the collecting facility, the lot number relating to the donor, the product code and the donor’s blood group and type (ABO & Rh).
The FDA has set a deadline for implementation of April 2006. The currently approved CBER bar codes are CODABAR and ISBT 128. ISBT 128 has many advantages over the old CODABAR system and is the only bar code system that will allow both blood collection centers and transfusion services to label
ALL products, including splits, divisions and irradiated
products with the proper product code and corresponding expiration date
in ISBT 128. ISBT 128 even provides for the labeling of syringes with unique product codes. We are close to having 4000 ISBT 128 product codes here in the U.S.
Digi-Trax has continued to support this initiative as active members of the American Technical Association Group (ATAG) of the AABB. We have also actively sought to form partnerships with all the leading blood bank software vendors to provide a seamless interface between their systems and our Hema Trax.LPS™ TCP/IP server to provide users with on-demand printing of all ISBT 128 labels.
