Challenge:
Geisinger Health Systems needed to replace the old labeling printers with
new bar code printers. The old printers contained a customized chip to
format the labels according to the pre-defined specifications.
However, with the introduction of the new bar code printers from Cognitive
Solutions, the printing system lost the ability to format the data coming
from the Misys® LIS application. The new printers could not print the
pre-designed specimen labels. Geisinger Health System needed some way to
print the same label formats on the new printers.

Solution:
The NiceLabel Suite software with NiceLabel Pro and the NiceWatch module
provided an easy and cost-effective solution to the printing challenges.
The document analysis filter in NiceWatch parses the printing code of
the old printers and maps the data to variables on a label template
created by NiceLabel Pro. The NiceWatch application works as an
intermediate step between the Misys lab system and the label printers
themselves. The NiceWatch print server technology customizes the label
format that comes out of the Misys lab system and distributes those
formatted bar coded labels to various locations throughout the
laboratory and hospital systems. The healthcare provider is able to keep
the same label format that the laboratory already used and, more
importantly, uses the same label stock that they were using with the
previous printer model.

Benefits:
The NiceLabel Suite solution allows the laboratory to customize the
label output from the Misys Lab system. The increased flexibility in
format design and routing of specimen labels helps the laboratory to
meet business needs and certain regulatory requirements. Digi-Trax
